■40年の家具づくりから生まれた、小さな箱
私は40年、注文家具を作ってきました。
大きなテーブルや椅子、収納家具。
その中で感じてきたのは、
「小さいものほど、ごまかしが効かない」ということ。
厚み、木目の出方、削りの加減。
ほんのわずかな違いが、そのまま表情になります。
この名刺入れには、
大きな家具づくりで積み重ねてきた感覚を、そのまま込めています。

■黒柿という木
黒柿は、柿の木の中でもごく稀に現れる黒い模様を持つ希少な木材です。
墨を流したような濃淡が入り、
一本ごとにまったく異なる表情を見せます。
古くから銘木として珍重され、
床柱や茶道具などにも用いられてきました。
しかし、この名刺入れに使った黒柿には、
素材としての希少性以上の特別な思いがあります。
私は40年以上家具を作ってきましたが、
工房には、どうしても使えずに大切に保管してきた木があります。
その一つが、この黒柿です。
家具にするには小さすぎる。
けれど、他の木と同じように使ってしまうには惜しい。
何十年もの間、
「いつか、この木にふさわしい形が見つかったら使おう。」
そう思い続けてきました。
小さな箱づくりを始め、
十数個の試作を重ねる中で、
ようやく「これなら黒柿を使ってもいい」と思える名刺入れが完成しました。
正直に言えば、
今でも少し手放すことをためらっています。
それでも、
美しい木を、美しく長く使える形にすることが、
家具職人としての私の仕事だと思っています。
この名刺入れが、
新しい持ち主とともに長い時間を過ごしてくれたら嬉しく思います。

■木目がつながるつくり
この名刺入れは、もともと一つの塊だった木から生まれています。
同じ材の塊から、ふたと本体を切り分け、
そこから形を整えています。
そのため、ふたと本体の年輪は自然につながっています。
加工の過程でわずかに削られるため、
完全に寸分違わず一致するわけではありません。
けれど、上下に通る木目の流れを見ると、
もともと一つだった木の呼吸が、そのまま残っています。
さらに、蓋を閉める方向を間違えないように、
蓋と本体の間に「Hayama Woodworks Studio」のロゴを小さく刻んでいます。
目立たない場所ですが、
機能とデザインを兼ねた、ささやかなチャームポイントです。
気づいたときに、少し嬉しくなる。
そんな小さなこだわりです。

蓋と本体は同じ木の塊から制作しているため、
木目は自然につながり、
同じ表情のものは二つとしてありません。
大量生産はできません。
良い黒柿と出会い、
職人自身が納得できるものだけを形にしています。
時間とともに艶を増し、
使い込むほどに味わいを深めていく、

■ A Small Box Born from 40 Years of Furniture Making
For 40 years, I have been crafting custom furniture—
large tables, chairs, storage pieces.
What I’ve learned over the years is this:
the smaller the object, the less room there is to hide imperfections.
Thickness.
Grain direction.
The slightest adjustment in shaping.
Even the smallest differences become visible.
In this card case, I’ve poured the same sensibility
I developed through decades of building furniture.

■ Kurogaki (Black Persimmon)
Kurogaki, or Black Persimmon, is one of Japan's rarest and most treasured hardwoods.
Its distinctive dark patterns appear only in a small number of persimmon trees, creating dramatic contrasts that resemble brushstrokes of black ink.
No two pieces are ever alike.
For centuries, Kurogaki has been prized for fine architectural details, tea ceremony utensils, and other traditional Japanese crafts.
Yet this particular card case represents more than the rarity of the wood itself.
After more than 40 years of building custom furniture, there are still a few pieces of timber in my workshop that I simply could not bring myself to use.
Kurogaki was one of them.
The boards were too precious to become ordinary furniture, yet too beautiful to remain hidden away.
For many years, I kept telling myself,
"One day, when I find the right form, I'll use this wood."
When I began creating small wooden boxes, I made more than ten prototypes before finally arriving at a design worthy of this remarkable timber.
To be honest, even now, parting with it is not easy.
But I believe the role of a furniture maker is to transform beautiful wood into objects that will be cherished and used for generations.
I hope this card case will continue that story in the hands of its new owner.

■ Continuous Grain from a Single Block
This card case originates from a single solid block of wood.
The lid and the body are cut from the same piece,
then carefully shaped into form.
Because of this, the grain flows naturally
from the lid into the base.
During the shaping process, a small amount of material is removed,
so the grain does not align with perfect precision.
But when you look closely,
you can still sense the continuity—
the quiet “breath” of what was once a single piece of wood.
To prevent closing it in the wrong direction,
a small “Hayama Woodworks Studio” logo is engraved
between the lid and the body.
It is subtle and discreet—
a small detail that combines function and design.
A quiet charm you may only notice after using it.

Kurogaki is one of Japan's most precious and highly valued hardwoods.
However, this price reflects far more than the rarity of the material.
Each piece is individually handcrafted from carefully selected Kurogaki that has been preserved in our workshop for many years.
The lid and body are carved from the same solid block of wood, allowing the grain to flow naturally across both pieces.
Because every piece of Kurogaki is unique, no two card cases are ever the same.
These are not mass-produced items.
They are created only when exceptional pieces of Kurogaki become available and when the craftsman feels the wood deserves to become a finished piece.
Over time, the wood develops an even richer patina, becoming a companion that grows more beautiful with every year of use.
Please note that Kurogaki card cases are produced only in limited quantities, depending on the availability of suitable timber.
